Terms of Service

These are the terms for using Stormwire (stormwire.us). They are deliberately short. By using Stormwire you agree to them.

The service. Stormwire is a free web app that shows active National Weather Service (NWS) alerts for places you choose. There is no account, no paid tier, no advertising, and no upgrade path; the five-saved-place limit is fixed.

Acceptable use. Stormwire is for your personal weather awareness. You agree not to:

Safety first — please read. Stormwire is a complement, not a replacement:

Stormwire is a complement to, not a replacement for, Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and NOAA Weather Radio

Source: National Weather Service

You see this caveat before you enable notifications, in the app's About section, and in the Stormwire user guide. Keep your normal warning sources on. Do not rely on Stormwire as your sole warning source. Official NWS products — and WEA, NOAA Weather Radio, and EAS — are the authoritative ones. Stormwire is an extra view, not the primary one. Weather information here is informational: alerts can be delayed, replaced, or outdated, and Stormwire shows data age when it knows its copy is stale.

About the NWS content. The alerts and product text you see come from public-domain US government data. Stormwire shows NWS products unmodified, with Source: National Weather Service on every product view; the short plain-language sentence at the top of an alert is Stormwire's own wording, clearly presented as a summary of the NWS text below it. The NWS name is used only to identify unaltered NWS content. Stormwire is an unofficial product: it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by NOAA or the National Weather Service, it uses no NWS or NOAA logo, and nothing in it should be read as an official NWS statement.

No warranty, no liability. Stormwire is provided "as is", with no warranties of any kind — no promise that it will be accurate, complete, timely, or available at any moment. It is a small independent service; it may be slow or unavailable, and notifications may be missed (for example, if your device is offline when a warning goes out, or if a notification sits unshown for too long and the browser's push service drops it). To the extent the law allows, Stormwire's operators are not liable for damages arising from use of, or inability to use, the service — including decisions or actions you take based on its content. Nothing here limits rights you cannot legally waive.

Availability limits that exist today. The service caps how many notification deliveries a single event may trigger, to stay stable under abuse; in a worst-case abuse scenario, newer subscribers in one affected area can temporarily miss that event's pushes while the in-app list still shows the alert. Some rate-limit allowances apply per network address, so shared networks share them; others are per device or per session. These are known, monitored limitations — they are stated here rather than hidden.

Changes. We may update these terms. The current version always lives at this page with its date; the updated terms apply from that date. We may also limit, suspend, or end access for abuse of the service.

Ending. You stop using Stormwire whenever you like — clearing this site's data from your browser removes everything it keeps there, and Settings → Data privacy → Delete my data removes the server records (see the Privacy Policy).
